Celiac Sprue

The National Institutes for Health issued a Request for Application seeking research funding to examine celiac disease prevalence in the United States. Studies of the diagnosed cases show that the years of symptoms before diagnosis went from 14.1 to 4.3, indicating improved diagnostic timing since 1980.
However, many cases remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as liver, heart, or kidney failure or some other organ disease that is in reality caused by celiac. The medical community requires greater awareness to encourage earlier testing when symptoms appear.
Private money is important, too. The research grant only covers a portion of the research; the rest must be donated.
